Field Studies
In Field Studies, I divide each painting into separate sections and use them as places to try different ways of making an image. Some sections may use patterns, others marks, textures, symbols, or more open areas of color. I t’s exciting to put these very different approaches next to one another and see what happens. The boundaries between the sections create both separation and connection, while repetition gives the whole painting a sense of rhythm. I like the unexpected relationships that appear when things that might normally belong in separate paintings are brought together. Each painting is a kind of visual fieldwork, a chance to try multiple approaches, observe what happens, and follow the possibilities that emerge.
